Journalist Report Title (if applicable) : Finding the North without magnetic field

Last night, Félix organized an activity in the GreenHab. Everyone was able to plant flower seeds in their pots. If everything goes well, they will sprout out of the ground in 2 days and will have grown in 15 days.

This morning, Adèle organized a cardio session. After that, it was EVA orienteering for the team with the 2D map: Adèle and Gaspard. I went with them to organize the race, take photos and videos with the drone. Before leaving, they had a preparation time to preview the positions of the beacons on the 2D map. Then, we moved by rover to Compass Rock and we went to the starting point of the race by foot. We started the stopwatch and Gaspard and Adèle were able to begin the race. In 30 minutes, they found 5 beacons out of 8, which gave them 5 letters that form a word. They managed to guess it. The outing was very physical, it was very hot, and we returned exhausted. Tomorrow, the team with the 3D map will do the same race and we will compare their results.

Meanwhile, Julien, Célia, and Félix worked on writing abstracts and an article. An abstract is a summary that allows proposing a scientific publication on an experiment or aspect of our mission at the occasion of a conference. Célia and Félix started writing an abstract about the Lab’Ex experiment for the IAC. Julien almost finished writing an article on our scientific mediation activities he will present at the SSEA conference in Munich in April.

This afternoon, Félix worked on his botanist project. He prepared the pots that will host micro sprouts of watercress. His Raspberry is programmed to automatically take measurements of temperature, humidity, and light.

Gaspard, Lou, and Célia continued working on the repair of the opening mechanism of the observatory and started building a new limit mechanism. They were almost able to install it, and Célia will be able to make solar observations tomorrow!

EVA #: 10

Purpose of EVA: Orienteering for photogrammetry experiment

The photogrammetry experiment aims to create 3D maps of the terrain around the MDRS. The quality and usefulness of the map will be assessed by other EVAs, using the map to orient themselves. This maps are created using Drone imagery, and this first EVA aims to map out a first point of interest outside of the station.

Start time: 10 : 30 AM

End time: 12 : 15 AM

Narrative: We went to Compass Rock with Curiosity and Opportunity. Once we were on site, we started an orienteering activity. Gaspard and Adèle searched the points we chose during EVA #7. The activity lasted 30 minutes and then we started using the drone for videos. We gathered interesting datas for the photogrammetry experiment. We couldn’t take a shot while driving the rovers due to a configuration issue but we fixed it after coming back to the station.

EVA #: 12

Purpose of EVA: Maintenance of atmospheric experiments, west of marble ritual

Start time: 9:37

End time: 10:15

Narrative:
Today we got our food resupply dropped in front of the Hab thanks to Mission Support. We began the EVA by picking it up and placing it in the airlock before closing it. We then went to the location of our atmospheric experiments and changed the battery as usual. Because of a small defect on the alimentation system, we have to restart the experiments each time we swap batteries, but it went without any issue.
This EVA was very short on purpose, so that we could focus on the rest of our work in the station.

Sol Activity Summary:

We had a good resting day yesterday. The day started with a short EVA. Its goal was to change the atmospheric equipment batteries and to collect data, everything went well. We conducted all our experiments on human factors without any issues. Then, we started doing the editing of the half-mission video. We also finished our mid-mission scientific summary. Our crew botanist started doing his own project in the greenhab. The toilets were checked and everything is ok. It was a busy day and tonight, everyone will relax.

We received our food supplies, thank you to mission support. Please find the inventory attached.

Journalist Report Title (if applicable) : At the dawn of the second half of the mission

SOL 13 was a rest day for us. Every week, Saturday is free, and we can rest before starting a new week. Everyone did activities to relax. Some read or wrote, and others did sports.
Today was the deadline for the abstracts of the IAC, and we submitted two abstracts: one on the Lab’Ex that Célia renamed the Géol’Ex, and one on a documentary that we are preparing and will be broadcast at the Cité de l’Espace in June. Julien also submitted his article for the SSEA conference in Munich in April about all the scientific mediation we did. After that, Gaspard prepared some bread for burgers that we will eat tonight. Gaspard, Lou, Célia, and Félix played a board game with several enigmas accessible after completing a puzzle.
In the afternoon, we watched a movie in the mezzanine of the HAB while some did crocheting, Brazilian bracelets, or necklaces.
Tonight, it’s burger on the menu! We will also play board games to wrap up this rest day nicely.
Tomorrow will mark the beginning of the second half of the mission!
