Journalist Report Title: Between heaven and earth

Early this morning, the EVA crew Marie, Matthias and Antoine got up at 6.30 to prepare for an 8am outing. Matias woke up as well to prepare for CapCom and left Joanna and Zahraa to catch up on their sleep. The Crew visited Gateway to Lilith, an unforgettable view which has given everyone a lot to talk about. Before they made their way back to the station, Matias worked on repairing the second com, Joanna spent some time on the static bike to make sure she still got a small workout in. Zahraa had a chill morning editing pictures and resting. Since the EVA was completed early in the morning, we were able to have a nice morning discussing the views. On the menu for lunch it was omelette with a side of bread and some leftover chili.

The wind was howling by early afternoon, this allowed for the Crew to do a video of their experiments in the station. Zahraa had time for everyone to pass her experiment which is related to speech patterns. The rest of the afternoon went smoothly. It was quite a quiet day because of the weather. The Crew is planning to have a cosy early dinner and a board games night.

EVA #: 6

Purpose of EVA: We are heading out there to explore the area and find the right spot for Joanna’s experiment.

Start time:08:12 AM
End time: 10:05 AM

Narrative: The crew started to prepare for the EVA at 07:40 AM after breakfast. After a check we discovered that comms kit #4 Headset was causing static noise. Everything else was working fine. They started decompression at 08:05 AM and then went to the rover and started their way to the Special Region. At Cowboy Corner we did a radio test for Matias’ experiment, then also at the Special Region where they arrived at 08:45. They continued their EVA walking. At 09:33 AM they returned to the rovers, to go back to the station. They arrived at 09:54 AM. Where they filmed a little video and then started decompression at 10:00 AM.

Summary Title: Exploring, Experimenting and Embracing the Wind

Mission Status:
A productive yet quiet day.

Sol Activity Summary:
Half of the team woke up at 6.30 am while the other half woke up at 8am. We had cereal with milk for breakfast. The EVA was at Gateway to Lilith to explore the environment to find suitable terrain for Joanna’s research but we have concluded that it will be a bit far.

For lunch we had omelette with bread and then started working on our reports. Zahraa was able to start her experiments with the Crew in L deck. We also worked a lot on personal projects as the wind outside wouldn’t allow us to do a second EVA. This evening dinner is pasta bake with broccoli and we are going to play board games.

Look Ahead Plan:
Tomorrow we will continue Antoine’s research. We are planning to test running it without him in the afternoon in order to go out all at once during the day and avoid biasing his experiment. We will also be working on our own experiments.

Anomalies in work:
The charger for one of the suits is no longer charging.

Weather:
It was very windy today and quite noisy inside the hab, but the sun was out which was a nice change.

Crew Physical Status:
Everyone is doing well.

EVA:
We will ultimately not be using the location for Joanna’s experiment as it is too far, but it was a great outing nonetheless.

We are wondering about transportation at the end of the simulation: How can we get to Grand Junction (using Cathy’s car, with two cars, or by coordinating with the next team)?

Non-nominal systems: Pressurised tunnels & suit charger, Comms kit #4

Notes on non-nominal systems:

  • Pressurised tunnels: We repaired the pressurised tunnel using 10 zip ties due to the high winds.

  • Suit charger: We hadn’t noticed, but one of the chargers was broken (probably before we arrived) (See pictures below). We replaced it with a new one. Could we fix it with glue? Is that possible, or is it unsafe?

  • All the joints of the comms kit #4 headset were resoldered. The problem has been solved.

Summary Title: Easter Day
Mission Status: Breaking the routine on Easter Day.
Sol Activity Summary:
Today was our rest day. We decided to celebrate Easter by sharing each other’s traditions. We woke up at 9:00 AM and had chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. After that we had an egg hunt in the HAB. We caught the animal that had been eating our plants in the GreenHab. For the rest of the morning, Antoine and Marie did 45 minutes of cardio while the girls washed their hair and Matthias worked on his assignment. As for Matias, he was our cheerleader for the workout. For lunch we had couscous cooked by Zahraa which was delicious. In the afternoon we took a nap to rest properly and then got ready for crew photos. After a 1 hour photoshoot, we played cards while enjoying an Easter cake prepared by Joanna and Marie. We are currently working on our reports while Matthias is preparing dinner. Mac and cheese is on the menu.

Look Ahead Plan:
Tomorrow’s plan: we will be carrying out Joanna’s experiment at Cowboy Corner. The goal is to have everyone go through it on the same day. She has therefore decided to stay fairly close to the base. This will take up the whole day. Some of us have planned to do sport. We will also be running Zahraa’s experiment in the lower hab.

Anomalies in work:
None
Weather:
No EVA was carried out today, but the computers reported good conditions outside plenty of sunshine and a fairly pleasant temperature.
Crew Physical Status:
Everyone in the crew is doing well, the rest of the day did us a lot of good.
EVA:
No AVE today.
