Purpose of EVA: Displacing the atmospheric instruments

Start time: 14:15

End time: 15:30

Narrative:
The installation of the atmospheric instruments during EVA #04 was overall a success. However, we couldn’t monitor the experiments from the Hab as planned. We decided to conduct a short EVA to move the instruments to a new location, closer to the Had West of Marble Ritual to keep some visual contact.
The distance to cover was very short, and we initially planned to conduct everything by foot. However, the ground is still muddy here, so we decided to use the rovers to get to the Marble Ritual site to increase the overall safety of the EVA.
We used the manual cart to move the cumbersome instruments, which proved very useful, especially on muddy grounds, allowing us to keep our balance while walking. We also studied the terrain before choosing our path on each side of the road, to avoid the muddy parts as much as possible (by staying on high ground mainly).
Another goal of the EVA was to gather the first piece of data from both experiments, which was done successfully. We successfully moved both experiments, along with their new battery to a location visible from the Hab, North West from Marble Road. We were able to restart the LOAC experiment, but we missed a piece of equipment to restart the Field Mill. Being short on time, we decided to come back to the station, and the next EVA will bring the right equipment to start the experiment again (it only requires to press one button at this point of the setup).
Every system was nominal during the EVA, even radios and no incident happened.

Purpose of EVA: Changing the atmospheric equipment battery and exploration of Compass Rock

Start time: 11:20

End time: 12:47

Narrative:

The goal was to change the atmospheric equipment battery near East of Marble Ritual and then continue to the North and then East to Compass rock to explore the area.

We had several issues during the EVA. First, we forgot to take the battery when we left the airlock, so we had to do another 5 min of decompression. Then, when we arrived at Cow Dung Road, we had a communication problem. The radio of the HSO stopped working, it was a false contact, it took us 30 min to solve the problem. Because of this time loss, we decided to just change the battery and to cancel the exploration to Compass Rock. The operation went well, there was just a lot of dust and mud so It was difficult to walk. When we handed back to the station and to the airlock, we figured that we forgot the Safety Kit and the Battery in the rovers so we had to go outside again and do another decompression. After the EVA, we decided to make a clear procedure for the EVA preparation and the equipment so that we won’t forget anything for the following EVAs. It was a little bit frustrating because we didn’t have time to do everything but it was a good experience so that we can improve during the mission !

MUSK OBSERVATORY

Solar Features Observed: sun edge and a tiny prominence.

Images submitted with this report: None

Problems Encountered: I didn’t see any sunspots. I saw on space weather online that there is not so much solar activity these past few days, so I don’t know if the absence of sunspots is because I didn’t set up well the telescope since it was my first observation, or if indeed there wasn’t any.

Summary Title: Starting our second week with a lot of work

Mission Status: We are entering the core of our mission, and everything is going great

Sol Activity Summary:
After a first rest day which was very beneficial to everyone in the crew, we start our second week with some rest and relaxation. While our minds definitely feel better, we still feel a bit physically tired from a very loaded first week. Nonetheless, we had a lot of work to do today, and wanted as well to conduct our first exploration EVA. This made for a challenging schedule of the day, but we are now very accustomed to the station and we managed to handle the day with impressive success.
The nice weather could finally allow Célia to start her solar observations.
The first EVA of the day encountered some delay from the weather and mission support’s approval, and was met with an issue with communications. In consequence, the EVA team didn’t get to explore the planned point of interest, but could maintain the atmospheric experiments as planned.
The second EVA of the day was an an almost complete success, we were able to displace both experiments in view of the HAB and restart one of them. The second one will require the next EVA Team to stop by for a few minutes on the way to their destination.
Today’s physical activity was challenging but woke up our bodies nicely after a day of slumber.
Anderson’s awesome shift as Mission Support ended today, and we now welcome Brett as our crucial onsite support. We look forward to keep working hand in hand with Support !

Look Ahead Plan:
We are looking to slow down the rythm of the day a bit, as we are expecting the adverse effects of confinement and isolation to strengthen throughout the week. Tomorrow we will conduct the first EVA of our Photogrammetry experiment, on a new location to explore.

Anomalies in work: Issues with EVA radios headsets

Weather: Sunny and Muddy

Crew Physical Status: Physically fit and well

EVA:
– EVA 05 Conducted with success
– EVA 06 Conducted with success
– EVA 07 to be planned, for the photogrammetry experiment

Journalist Report Title (if applicable) : Cowboy Corner

Today, the goal was to explore this new planet! Félix, Adèle and Julien did an EVA at Cowboy Corner towards Tharsis Montes. Before that, they stopped by Marble Ritual to change the batteries of the atmospheric instruments. It is a task that we have to conduct every 2 days. After a 15 minutes drive with the rovers, they were able to explore new landscapes. They walked 1 kilometer and the field was more difficult than the other EVA. Spacesuits were cumbersome and long walks were exhausting with all the equipment to carry on. But it offers awesome view on this new planet where every day we are taking a step forward, getting to know her better !

Meanwhile, Gaspard, Lou and I started to create the 3D map for the photogrammetry experiment. Yesterday, we took photos of the area and today we could create a first map which will be used this week for the orientation races. Célia was CapCom for the EVA, but for the solar observations, there were some issues with the opening of the dome. We hope that we will fix that in the following days ! Instead, she did some treatments for her nocturnal observations.

This afternoon, we took a little break because the morning was quite intense. Afterwards, we had an HSO brief from Adèle to discuss all together about everything we felt during the first week of the mission. We then went back to our respective daily tasks. Adèle and I also had a NeuroErgo session.

Lou kept working on her AirLock project to enhance the fidelity of our simulation. For now, the countdown for the decompression starts when we go out of the station, but not when we come back because the sensors were only installed on the inside door of the airlock. This afternoon she made the sensors for the outside door.

Félix and Célia planted the broccoli microgreens that they prepared together last week. Microgreens are seeds that grow very rapidly, from which we will eat the leaves and the remains of the seed. They have a strong taste and will nicely enhance our meals. Our mission lasts a full month et we will be able to follow the full life cycle of the sprouts.

Tonight, we will plant the flowers seed that Félix prepared for us!
