Cookie day today!

The day started with breakfast at 08h00 with the breakfast. We ate some cereals with dried milk and dried apples with some cinnamon. As usual, Julien studied our sleep and Jean did some analysis of our metabolism.

Last night we caught a huge rodent so, during breakfast, we had a discussion to know what to do with him: kill him or release it during the EVA. The concern was that if we released him we were afraid he would end up coming back but on the other hand half of the team didn’t want to kill him. So, we decided to release him and we hope he won’t come back.

At 9h00, a part of the crew went on EVA. The goal was to perform a match on the experiment of Julie. This time it was Sirga against Julien. Therefore, the group was constituted of Julien, Sirga, Jean, Julie, and Audrey. Julien won the match. The EVA ends at 10h30. Julie and Sirga have extended the EVA in order to release the rodent. The crew was happy that this rodent is now out of the station.

At lunch, we ate some soup and then some fried potatoes. After, everyone worked on his/her personal experiment.

At 16h00, Julien and Sirga cooked some cookies and Sirga added her best ingredient: some worms! In the end, we don’t really taste it and the cookies were really tasty!

Then, we worked again on our different experiments until 18h30.

Now, we are doing our reports for the Capom window.

Tonight, we would like to continue our sky observations and try to take some time-lapse of the stars.

Regarding the mood of the team, it was a bit tense at the breakfast with the rodent argument but everything quickly went down and with the cookies, the morale of the team is now as good as usual.

Regarding the station, except for the invasion of rodents (we can still hear other ones) and a small issue with the SOC (now fixed), everything is nominal.

Summary of Hab operations : We had some rodents in the Hab and yesterday night was quite noisy, so we put out our forks and went to war ! Armed with an empty pot and some cheese as a trap we try to ambush them around midnight!

When we left the Upper part to go to the bathroom, the previous plan perfectly worked ! We caught our invisible guest ! (Which was not that invisible in order to the size of the plenty (of a piece of wall maybe) belly that the enemy got !)

After a big debate at the breakfast, about the way that we are going to get rid of our night prisoners, we finally decide with Shannon that we are going to make him do the walk of shame in the middle of the desert.

To the Moon and beyond!

Yesterday evening on ground 8, a delicious Belgian dish revisited, small play of belote, evening discussion and small film not worth the trouble and finally the hypnosis session of Julien towards 2 am.
This morning, on the 9th day of our adventure, the wind was caressing the roof of our cabin and after a pancake breakfast, the EVA team left to get ready. The three people staying in the station as backup are Jean, Julie and myself, joined later by Audrey who will return earlier to prepare for the chirugical challenge that starts at 12 pm. The Moon mission is launched with the aim of using Cyril’s radar to study the dielectric properties of the ground, explore and use the drone if the external conditions allow it

Cheyenne tell me about your adventure after the radar mission on the way home 😉 :
Today’s EVA it was to the moon! After a while, we realized that we had missed the road on the left leading to it and that we were too far away ! So we went back on our steps. For my part, no worries, driving the rovers is a real pleasure ! Once arrived, we parked our vehicles and continued our exploration by foot. Soon, the brownish and reddish regolith of the Martian soil gave way to the more and more whitish and grayish lunar substrate. After having climbed a few hills and slopes, a magnificent landscape of plains and dunes with white tones was offered to us. What a privilege to discover so many stars during this interstellar expedition ! The wind was with us and it was sometimes difficult to hear each other through our radio communications. Nevertheless, we managed to take some pictures and videos. After enjoying the view one last time and collecting some soil, we headed back to the road. Just before returning, we climbed a small mountain, this time a Martian one. It was sporty and steep ! But once again, the sport was worth it : from the top, we had a breathtaking view of the valley and the MDRS. Can our comrades who stayed at the camp see us from here ? Once again, a few shots and we headed back to the mother house, it was already time to go back and in space timing is everything ! Hop hop hop, we were back to the rovers and 10 minutes later, in the pressurization SAS. It was a great EVA, one of the last ones considering our departure which is approaching day after day, but this deadline makes us enjoy these moments even more.

Thank you Cheyenne for this story !

On the way back, the anatomy and mechanics team fought outside for the place of the best surgeon. Last match for Cyril assistant and Ignacio operator. Unfortunately for the anatomy team, Audrey who was an operator fell several times like a turtle back on its shell… I might as well tell you : Ouch for the anatomy team. Well the mechanical team still used a wheelbarrow to compensate the weight of the space suits if they were on all fours on the ground. Very stressful fight in addition to the wind that tried to steal every object made of papers.
You should have seen the scene, a real musical : Audrey on her back not knowing how to get up, the boys sweating to puncture the leg and create a "Gruyère", Julie running after the sheet and the bags, it was only missing that the people remaining inside started to sing "Oh happy Day" and the movie was in the box…

After all these emotions we tasted a soup unknown to any Belgian sitting at the table. A cheese and potato soup ?! Accompanied by a bread with insects, I still don’t know which of these two foods is the most bizarre ^^".

This afternoon the wind blows stronger and stronger and since 4 pm we have no electricity… We are still orphans of power … no electricity means no more gas stove, no more water pump, no more heating. We still have a glass of water and a coffee for 8…
For the moment still no electricity it is 6.40pm.
If you are reading this Journalist Report it means that we are not dead of thirst.
We all hope you will read it.

Farewell. I’m just kidding, we’ll find a solution 😉

Windy day!

This day started with a big sun and tasty pancakes, aka the best wake-up ever!
At 9h00, a part of the crew went on EVA. This group was constituted of Julien, Cheyenne, Audrey, Ignacio and I. The purpose of that EVA was to explore the moon-like area. I took advantage of that EVA to perform some measurements with my antenna. This time, it worked directly! The moon-like are was quite pretty and different from what we already saw

At 12h00, the second EVA started. The goal of that EVA was to perform a match for the experiment of Julie. This time it was Ignacio against Audrey. It was very difficult with the spacesuits. With Ignacio we did quite a good job. Unfortunately, Audrey didn’t manage to finish her operation. Therefore, here is another point for the Engineer team!

At 14h00, we had lunch. We ate a cheesy soup with some bread. The bread was based on worms. It was not the best meal ever, but it did the job. At the same time, the wind started to be very powerful, we can feel the station moving.

At 16h00, we had a power outage. Since a lot of us have computers that requires a direct connection to the main, we were not able to work on our experiment anymore. Therefore, some of us read some books and the other played card games. We get the power back around 19h15.

At 19h30, we get a refill of food. The team was happy to see some flour so we can continue to make our own bread.

We are now working on our reports for the capcom window. This night, the team would like to play a board game.

The moral of the crew is still really good! However, we are already SOL 9 and we know that soon the simulation will arrive to its end. We will continue to enjoy each day as we did so far.

Regarding the station, except the power shortage and the high wind, everything is nominal.

Purpose of EVA: Experiment of broken leg fixator on EVA and exploration of the moon like D area.
Start time: 9:00
End time: 1:30 pm
Narrative: The EVA team set out North to Brahe Hwy and helped Cyril gather its data on soil dielectric properties. Once this was done, the team dropped back Audrey at the HAB to prepare for her lex fixing experiment. Unfortunately, this was not enough as the broken leg could not be fixed within time constraints. The other bone was however superbly assembled by Ignacio.
