Static tank pipe heater (on or off): On
Static tank heater (On or off): On
Toilet tank emptied: No.

Summary of internet: No issues with the internet. Connection is good.

Summary of suits and radios:

The crew used the two-piece EVA suits on the EVAs today. Before the first EVA, our Executive Officer, Alli Taylor, first put on Suit #6 and everything was working fine, but before she left the habitat, she noticed that she was getting warm and her helmet started to fog up. It seems that the fan had a very low air flow despite turning up the air flow dial, so she switched suits and took Suit #4 instead.

During the second EVA, our Health and Safety Officer, Barbara Braun, used Suit #4, as well. By the end of the EVA, she was experiencing low air flow. She asked another crew member to turn up her air flow dial, but by the time she returned to the front air lock at the end of the EVA, there was no air flow at all.

From a Crew Engineer’s perspective, I suspect this may be a charging issue because upon inspection of the suits tonight, I noticed that the suits in question were not set to the “off” mode and hence were not charging. I believe this is what caused the lack of airflow, but I will monitor the situation and report back tomorrow.

Finally, the two walkie talkies mentioned previous reports (one from the upstairs set and one from the downstairs set) are still not working.

Summary of GreenHab operations: Today, the GreenHab Officer harvested some carrot sprouts for dinner. Additional information can be found in the GreenHab Report.
WATER USE: ~28 gallons (~5 gallons today)
Heater: On
Supplemental light: Off
Harvest: 28.3 grams (28.3 oz; converted using 1 oz = 28.4 g)

Summary of ScienceDome operations: The Crew Engineer performed mirror inspections using the Aerospace Corp microscope and took images of the abnormalities/anomalies observed.
Dual split: No heat or AC used. All systems off.

Summary of RAM operations: N/A

Summary of any observatory issues: No observatory issues.

Summary of health and safety issues: No health and safety issues.

Questions, concerns and requests to Mission Support: The Crew Engineer has not yet installed the furnace air filter. Please advise if this is something you would like us to do tonight/tomorrow. Crew on second EVA today did an external inspection of the habitat. Everything looked good.

Supplemental Operations Report 03Dec2022

[title Supplemental Operations Report – December 3rd]

Name of person filing report: Shannon Rupert

Reason for Report: Routine

Non-nominal systems: Generator

Action taken for non-nominal systems: Propane regulator was checked and pressure increased from 9 to 11. The generator seems to be running better, but there is still some sort of miscommunication between the generator and power system. Still working on it.

Generator: Running from about 8 pm to 8 am.

ScienceDome Dual Split: Heat on between 8 pm and 8 am at 67degrees F.

Sojourner rover used: yes

Hours: not noted

Beginning charge: 100

Ending charge: 100

Currently charging: yes

Notes on rovers: We disconnected the heat sensor from the motor in Oppy. Oppy has had a faulty sensor since it was new (this is a factory problem for some Polaris Ranger EVs). As a result, Oppy has been underused. The only way to fix the problem was to replace the motor, which would cost $2800. Instead we disconnected the sensor, then tested the rover by driving it as fast and as safely as possible to the cattle guard at the beginning of Cow Dung Road and back. We checked the motor temperature by touch several times and each time it was only as hot as Soji. The only downside to this repair is that if the motor does actually overheat in the future, the motor will fail. Then we will have to replace it, but if this repair holds we will have a fully functioning rover. It currently has less than half the hours of every other rover, and now it can be used more.

ATV’s Used: (Honda, 350.1, 350.2, 300): Honda

Reason for use: charging battery

Oil Added? no

ATV Fuel Used: 0 Gals

# Hours the ATVs were Used today: 0

Notes on ATVs: Currently waiting to be picked up for serving. After I started and moved the Honda today, it got stuck in 2nd gear. This means that none of the ATVs are currently operational.

HabCar used and why, where? Yes, to town and to the dump

CrewCar used and why, where? Yes, to town and to Grand Junction

Luna used and why, where? Yes, to town and to Loa

General notes and comments: Tabs for the year were purchased for the 2018 rovers and the HabCar. That means all vehicles are registered until next year.

Summary of internet: Nominal. HudgesNet is currently off, and we plan to reroute it for crew use and keep Starlink at the Outpost except when crews are out of sim. The new iMac has been installed at the HabCom Station on the lower deck, however we will be moving it back to the Outpost and relocating the desk back to the SciDome when this crew is completed. We need to reimagine the HabCom station because where we put it, it was just getting used as a workbench.

Summary of suits and radios: See crew operations reports. The next upgrade to the repeater system will take place when Crew 271 is on station.

Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why? There are great advantages to having two people working on campus. Today we hitched the trash trailer up to the HabCar and delivered years of accumulated waste to the dump. The trailer still has the one tire with the slow leak but otherwise worked well. We added air to all tires so that each was at 30 psi.

Summary of general operations: Started work on moving the conduit.

Summary of Hab operations: Nothing to report

Summary of Outpost operations: Nothing to report

Summary of GreenHab operations: Plants were fertilized. Tomato cages were installed. Timer was installed for four hours of supplemental light from 10 pm – 2 am.

Summary of ScienceDome operations: Nothing to report. Duel split turned on to 67 degrees F overnight, same timing as the generator.

Summary of RAM operations: Nothing to report

Summary of any observatory issues: Nothing to report

Summary of health and safety issues: Nothing to report

Summary of internet: No issues with the internet. Connection is good.

Summary of suits and radios:

The Crew Engineer (Ashley Kowalski) and GreenHab Officer (Matthew Eby) performed repairs on EVA suit #7. Ashley and Matt located the soldering iron, solder, and wire in the RAM and performed the repairs in that module. In order to remove the old solder, they used the soldering iron to melt it off. This enabled them to push new wires through the connection openings and then resolder new wires to that area. They were able to manually peel off any of the additional glue around the previous connections. After cleaning up the connection points, all wire connections were successfully reconnected to the old charging socket (we used EVA suit #8 as an example to follow). Please see attached photo displaying the repaired connections (please see photo 001 attached). However, even with all of the wire connections reconnected correctly, the fans were still not turning on. Therefore, Ashley and Matt tested all of the connections with the multimeter and noticed that even though the battery was reading ~13 V, the battery power was not transferring to the on/off switch. Upon further investigation, they realized that the fuse was blown (please see photo 002 attached). Thus, they located spare fuse parts in the EVA suit repair kit and put a new fuse in the system, which solved the problem. The fans turned on, the charging port was reconnected, and EVA suit #7 is now cleared for use.

One additional point that was noticed during the repair was that the lower connection on the on/off switch (the one that is circled in photo 003 attached; it is the one that connects the battery power to the fans) is a bit loose. Ashley and Matt attempted to tighten this connection, but it is still a bit loose. Why is this important? They believe that the looseness of this connection might have been the reason that the fuse blew. As you can see in the video uploaded to the Google drive link, when that connection is in one position (not pushed all the way down, but pushed slightly inward), it reads an incorrect value on the multimeter. When the connection IS pushed all the way down (pushed outward), the correct, expected value is read on the multimeter. Ashley and Matt recommend replacing this switch in the future as this connection may cause problems for future crews.

Finally, the two walkie talkies mentioned previous reports (one from the upstairs set and one from the downstairs set) are still not working.

Summary of GreenHab operations: Today, the crew joined the GreenHab Officer in the greenhouse and helped with planting carrots and onions. Additional information can be found in the GreenHab Report.
WATER USE: ~23 gallons (~5 gallons today)
Heater: On
Supplemental light: Off
Harvest: N/A

Summary of ScienceDome operations: N/A
Dual split: No heat or AC used. All systems off.

Summary of RAM operations: A soldering iron, solder, wire, and a spare EVA suit fuse were used in the RAM to repair EVA suit #7. The heater was turned on while the Crew Engineer and GreenHab Officer were in the RAM performing the repairs. The heater was turned off and unplugged upon exiting the RAM.

Summary of any observatory issues: No observatory issues.

Summary of health and safety issues: No health and safety issues.

Questions, concerns and requests to Mission Support: The Crew Engineer provided Mission Support with the dimensions of the microwave grease filter. Also, when the wind picked up this afternoon before the crew was able to attach the additional security rope to the front airlock outer door, the door swung upon. The crew received permission to re-secure the door. Finally, we received the air filter for the furnace, but the Crew Engineer has not yet installed it.

Operations Report – November 30th

SOL: 3

Name of person filing report: Ashley Kowalski

Non-nominal systems: (1) Wire connections to plug on EVA suit #7 (updates from yesterday’s report), (2) Microwave/vent hood light

Notes on non-nominal systems:

The crew received the EVA suit #7 repair instructions. In accordance with those instructions, the Crew Engineer with the assistance of the GreenHab Officer removed the air vent successfully. Upon inspection of the lower interior of the suit, we did not locate the tiny screw that holds the “push” button pin to the charging socket. We were able to find another screw in the EVA repair kit, and we screwed in the button pin. However, upon taking off the air vent, we realized that the actual wire connections that connect to the charging socket were disconnected. Yesterday when we reported that the EVA suit was still charging, we made this assumption based on the green light that was shining on the wall plug. We realized today that that wall plug shines green even if it is not plugged into any device, thus the wires were most likely already disconnected last night. In the RAM, we found a soldering iron, solder, and wire. We feel confident that we could reconnect these wires, but would like Mission Support’s agreement with this plan prior to proceeding. If we want to use the current plug, we would need solder wick in order to clean up the current connections before resoldering new wire connections. However, we did find a new plug in the EVA repair kit, so if we use this new plug, we would not need the solder wick. Please advise us on how to proceed. Two images are attached for your reference.

Additionally, while the Crew Engineer was on EVA this afternoon with two other crew members, the Commander investigated the light under the microwave/vent hood. She used a Philips screwdriver to remove the light cover and found there is currently no light bulb inside. Thus, she could not tell what size light bulb it takes. However, she did take a picture of the appliance information and serial number from inside the microwave door (please see attached image). Can mission support please look up the model number and determine what type of light they need to order?

Non-nominal systems: (1) Anomaly with the front air lock, (2) “Push” button on EVA suit #7 is broken.

Notes on non-nominal systems: Upon returning from our EVAs, we noticed that the front air lock was difficult to close. The crew members needed to almost lift the door in order to be able to close it. It seemed as though the lower hinge was broken. The crew contacted Tier 1 support regarding this issue. The crew is also willing and interested in scheduling an EVA to try to fix this issue, if mission support is in agreement and the necessary tools/parts are available to us.

Regarding the broken “push” button in suit #7, the crew used a few tools from the RAM and made attempts to fix this, but were unsuccessful. Tier 1 support was contacted, and we are awaiting further instructions on how to fix this. Please note that the broken “push” button does not seem to affect the ability for the suit to charge.

Supplemental Operations Report – November 26th

Name of person filing report: Shannon Rupert
Reason for Report: Routine/crew changeover
Non-nominal systems: Generator

Action taken for non-nominal systems: Since we began running the generator this season, we have noticed a lag in the motor. On Nov 24th, we had a brown out during the night. The power monitor in my trailer was sounding an alert so we turned the generator off at 5 am. Later that day we serviced the generator completely and did some testing. The brown out was not caused by the power load, as the generator dragged both when connected to the system and when it was not. So we are now going to have the propane provider check the fuel regulator to see if there is a problem in that part of the system.

Generator: We are running it about 13 hours a day right now, which is normal for this time of year. On Nov 25th, we replaced the air filter (since the one I had installed on the 12th was one that had been briefly used last season, checked all parts, cleaned air intakes, changed spark plugs. We need to change the oil again but are waiting for the shipment of oil.
