Summary Title: Exploring different corner of the Map
Mission Status: Tiredness is setting in, but the team is determined to enjoy every remaining moment to the fullest
Sol Activity Summary:
We woke up at 8:00 AM as usual and kicked off the day with pancakes before the first EVA departed for Green Mars View, with Antoine, Joanna, and Matias. The team was charmed by the lush greenery of the area, it truly lives up to its name. All experiments went smoothly, and after wrapping up, the team made their way over to Special Region to explore the area and test the radio there as well. It was the last time the crew would venture to that side of the map.
Back at the hab, the rest of the crew kept busy, sorting through drone footage, preparing samosas, and re-securing the bolts holding the exterior corridor panels in place. Lunch was a warm and satisfying affair, with soup and freshly made samosas.
The afternoon began with a well-deserved rest period while the rovers charged up. The crew also took the opportunity to film short videos explaining their experiments for our social media channels.
At 4:00 PM, Joanna, Matthias, Antoine, and Marie headed out for Antoine’s experiment at Candor Chasma. Finding yourself surrounded by towering canyons is a humbling experience, you truly feel small in the face of such vast and dramatic landscapes.
Meanwhile, Zahraa prepared hamburgers for dinner and took the time to read through articles relevant to her experiment, while Matias worked on processing his observatory photographs.

Look Ahead Plan:
Tomorrow marks our final EVA for Joanna’s experiment. We will head out in two teams to Kissing Camel Ridge, bringing along the heavy equipment. We will also begin packing our bags as we prepare for departure. These are our last moments here…

Anomalies in work:
The salad fallen victim to our Martian monster, and the zip ties struggling to keep the tarps in place, aside from that, all is well.

Weather:
It was quite warm today with little airflow, though no rain or humidity to speak of.

Crew Physical Status:
The whole crew is doing well.

EVA:
Both EVAs went smoothly despite the heat. Nothing further to add beyond what has already been covered.

We have decided to end the simulation in line with Antoine and Joanna’s departure. We would like to clarify when the final report should be submitted, should it be sent at noon, or at the usual time of 7:00 PM?

Journalist Report Title (if applicable): Experiments and adventures

Today was a busy day, after some nice chocolate chip pancakes. Matias, Antoine and Joanna went out to Green Mars view to do Antoine’s experience. The name describes the place well, not only is it green but the views were magnificent. The crew then headed to Special Region to try out Matias’s resonating loop which allows to amplify the radio calls. They were hopeful to maybe find a fossil where there are plenty, but there was nothing to be found except a canyon which they were able to observe from a view point. Back at the hab, Marie sorted through our pictures and did her sport, Matthias who tended to the Greenhab also helped Zahraa make samosa for the Crew’s lunch. It was delicious! We had a long wait between both EVA’s to allow time for the rovers to charge, so we had a slow lunch then filmed the presentation of all our experiments here on Mars. By 3.30pm the second EVA was gearing up: Antoine, Joanna, Matthias and Marie went out to see another terrain for Antoine’s experience: Candor Chasma while Zahraa and Matias stayed back at the station to work and read more literature on their experiments. The EVA was beautiful but very hot, the Crew was happy to come back to some nice cool water. As our time here at the MDRS is slowly coming to an end, we are having burgers tonight to the joy of the whole Crew. Luckily, Zahraa is an expert bread maker so she can whip up some delicious burger buns! The Crew is very happy but we are feeling tired so we will have an early night tonight, so that we’re ready for our last few EVA’s tomorrow.

First Day on Mars: Entering New Worlds

Today was our first day on Mars. We woke up around 6:30, and Charlotte made pancakes, which we happily devoured. Then we prepared for the EVA. Kat wasn’t feeling very well, so Elisa took her place for the first EVA to Marble Ritual between 10 and 11. Afterwards, Dave and Charlotte carried out the second EVA to Marble Ritual.

After a quick lunch of mashed potatoes and mushrooms prepared by Matteo, Dave, Elisa, and Matteo went out to film and work on photographic projects, while Kat and Charlotte stayed at the Hab to work and write. This evening Charlotte prepared a lentil and potato stew for dinner, which was very good, and everyone is now busy writing reports and planning the next days.

Arriving on Mars is an interesting experience. Despite months of online calls, we are only now beginning to really get to know one another, and to learn how to communicate our different needs. While some have known each other for a long time, others have only just met and come from very different worlds. We are slowly learning how to enter one another’s worlds.

Everyone is a bit tired and some feel sick. We are still adjusting from our different journeys, still partly carrying the baggage we brought from Earth, and trying to understand how this world works. It is a completely new reality. The desert around us is astonishing, although it also feels as if we are never really going outside, since we bring the Hab with us even when we go out, in our suits.

Non-nominal systems: Radio 2 & 4. Headset 6.

Notes on non-nominal systems: Radio 2 exhibits intermittent connectivity at the female-end connector, with a stable connection only achieved when pressure is applied. Cross tested with other radio to confirm the fault is isolated to Radio 2, indicating a likely connector or internal contact issue.

Headset 6 has a nonfunctional push to talk switch, preventing transmission.

Radio 4 also demonstrates intermittent connectivity at the connector interface, requiring applied pressure/ manipulation for operation. Additionally, the unit has a partial communication fault: inbound audio is received, but outbound transmission is not detected by the Radio 4 operator.
