Journalist Report Title: A small step for Crew 333

We woke up today for our first day of simulation. After having porridge for breakfast, it was soon time for our first EVA. During the suit-up, we realized there was an issue with the headset in Com’s kit #2, so we switched to the one in Com’s kit #4. Joanna, Antoine, and Marie headed out to explore the surroundings, while Matias stayed back as Com’s officer with help from Zahraa. Meanwhile, Matthias started potting plants for his experiments. The EVA went mostly smoothly. We briefly lost contact with the drone, which meant returning to Pooh’s Corner to retrieve it before continuing on to Cowboy Corner. After taking in the Martian-like landscape and testing the drone, we returned to the Hab for lunch: fried rice prepared by Matias and Zahraa. Matthias also fixed a technical issue he had with the GreenHab data on the Mac.

After eating, we debriefed and shared our thoughts on the first EVA, then finished our EVA report. As the clock approached 2pm, the second group began preparing for their EVA. This time, Matthias, Matias, and Zahraa went out to explore and better understand the subtleties of an EVA. They came back in awe of what they had seen. Their EVA went smoothly and they had no issue finding their way around the martian terrain. During their EVA, Antoine served as Com’s officer, while Marie and Joanna took some time to exercise on the bike. Once everyone was back, we had a small get-together and worked on our reports. Antoine and Matthias later did some exercise together. Tonight’s dinner is shepherd’s pie, and we’re planning to end the day with a movie night.

Summary Title: First day on Mars

Mission Status: Exploring the area

Sol Activity Summary:

Today we woke up at 7:30 AM and had breakfast. We started getting ready at 8:00 AM, with departure at 9:00 AM for the EVA with Antoine, Joanna and Marie. Matias served as our CAPCOM at the base, while Matthias and Zahraa worked on their experiments. The EVA crew returned at 11:00 AM. We then had lunch and worked on our reports.

There was then a second EVA by the other group of the team (Matias, Matthias and Zahraa). The remaining crew members worked on their reports and exercised. We then had dinner at 7:00 PM.

Look Ahead Plan:

Tomorrow our program is based on an EVA to continue exploring the area. Our crew will keep advancing in their research and further discover the surroundings to establish their landmarks. We will also be putting together a menu for the coming days.

Anomalies in work:

In kit COM 2, the microphone is not working.

Physically fit and well, just a bit tired. Only a previous injury that reappeared for one crew member, but it was well taken care of.

Purpose of EVA: We are heading out to scout the area and check that all the equipment is functional in the field.

Start time: 2:05 p.m.
End time: 3:37 p.m.

Narrative:
At 2:05 PM, the crew completed decompression and boarded the rovers Perseverance and Spirit, marking the beginning of the EVA. The first stop was Pooh’s Corner, where the team familiarize themselves with the terrain and conducted initial communication tests between the station and the EVA crew.

At 2:36 PM, the crew returned to the rover and departed for the second stop. A minor GPS issue arose during transit but was quickly identified and successfully resolved, allowing the mission to proceed without delay. Upon arrival at Cowboy Corner, the team explored the area and initiated a search for potential fossils, taking time to observe the geological features of the site.

At 3:19 PM, the crew left Cowboy Corner and headed back to the station, arriving at 3:29 PM. Decompression procedures began at 3:32 PM and were successfully completed at 3:37 PM, marking the end of the EVA.

Summary Title: Two EVAs and an Unexpected Repair

Mission Status: Going great

Sol Activity Summary:
Today we woke up at 7:30 AM and had porridge for breakfast. Part of the team went on an EVA while the others stayed at the base and worked on their papers. Once the team returned, we noticed that one of the tarps had come loose from the pressurized tunnels. Matias and Antoine therefore went out in their suits to repair the tunnel. We then had a soup with pasta which was very filling.

The second part of the crew then went on an EVA, they went further to see the sea of oceans as the rovers had more battery. Upon returning, we worked on our reports and on the agenda for later, chicken curry and a little mime game in the evening.

Look Ahead Plan:
Tomorrow’s plan includes 2 EVAs to explore the area for the experiments, followed by a chill evening with popcorn and burgers!

It was sunny today, but unfortunately still quite cold. Mars is not such a warm planet after all!

Operations Report – April 3rd

Non-nominal systems: Pressurized tunnels

Notes on non-nominal systems: The pressurized tunnel connecting the RAMM and the living module was damaged. Matias and I, Antoine, went to repair it in spacesuits. We used a new patch and a lot of self-locking fasteners (a whole bagful, and even a little more). The team began the emergency EVA at 12:13 p.m. and completed the operation at 1:06 p.m (See pictures below).

Purpose of EVA: The team went to Antoine’s experiment site to conduct the experiment. Antoine explained his experiment before the EVA. All participating crew members will analyze the surrounding landscape according to the defined criteria.

End time: 3:49 p.m.

Narrative: Preparations began at 1:30 PM with the EVA officially starting at 2:06 PM following a radio check. Communication was one-sided throughout: transmissions from the EVA crew were clear, but CapCom-to-crew reception was frequently poor. The crew traveled along Cow Dung Road to the destination they arrived with no further news. They started completing the document for Antoine’s research. They finished at 2:44 PM, so they went exploring to Sea of Shells. They drove carefully because the roads were difficult.

The team climbed a hill to have better visibility. They got back into their rovers and headed back. The crew returned to the station, reported rover parameters, and completed the standard 5-minute airlock decompression sequence, concluding the EVA.

Purpose of EVA: Antoine will conduct an EVA to carry out his field experiment. If conditions permit, a drone will be deployed to capture the images needed for the experiment. If not, the task will be postponed and carried out during a future EVA with other crew members. In the meantime, all participating crew members will analyze the surrounding landscape according to the defined criteria.

Narrative: Preparations began at 8:30 AM with the EVA officially starting at 9:03 AM following a radio check. Communication was one-sided throughout: transmissions from the EVA crew were clear, but CapCom-to-crew reception was frequently poor.

The crew traveled along Cow Dung Road, making stops along Brahe Highway 157-2 and at the Overlook, where Antoine’s experiment was conducted due to battery concerns limiting further vehicle travel. An additional stop was made on Cow Dung Road for Matìas’s experiment, during which GPS coordinates were recorded multiple times by the CapCom.

The crew returned to the station at 11:32 AM, reported rover parameters, and completed the standard 5-minute airlock decompression sequence, concluding the EVA.
